CAMPHILLGATE HISTORY

Camphillgate Building

The category B listed building was built in 1906 by the prolific architect John Nisbet and builder John McTaggart. As well as the unique communal roof garden, the building was also the first tenement in Glasgow to be built with fireproofing. It has featured in many books about the Southside and about Glasgow tenement design and is included in both the Shawlands and the Langside Heritage trails.

GLASGOW OPEN HOUSE ARTS FESTIVAL

29 & 30 APRIL 2017

A series of exhibitions will be taking place throughout the Camphill Gate building including work by Sarah J Stanley, Rachael Rebus, Josée Aubin Ouellette, Ann Nisbet, Allistair Burt, Susan Castillo and The People's Bank of Govanhill.

RACHAEL REBUS

Exhibition title: Lo and behold

Exhibition statement: In an age of cut backs and threats to woman's rights the exhibition, "Lo and behold," will examine how far women have progressed in their fight for gender equality. The exhibition will present large-scale drawings and paintings that examine the history of the female nude in contemporary culture while exploring its roots in the sculpture of Greek antiquity. The work focuses on Greek myths of transformation that correlate with women's rights issues still prevalent today and draws from contemporary imagery in fashion magazines, celebrity culture and advertising.

Bio: Rachael Rebus graduated from DoJCAD in 2010 and completed Turps Banana's Correspondence Course in 2015. She has exhibited throughout the UK and took part in GOHF 2015. She lives and works in Edinburgh.

SARAH J STANLEY

Title: Everything feels fucked

Statement:

My work retains strong elements of drawing and painting alongside a varied set of mediums and pieces, creating a delicate formal balance of mark and imagery as well as employing text and invention. Often I display tendencies towards the satirical, and steering away from irony and it's other shallow counterparts, I take the proverbial piss with sobriety. Disbanding semiotics stubbornly, I like to make sure the viewer can experience some sense of disciplined wit. The readily unspoken, fiction-like, but tediously honest nature of my work, I hope, leaves it capable enough to describe itself earnestly within quips of discerning visual discourse and with the integrity of a studious prankster

100 word bio:

The People’s Bank of Govanhill was intiated by artist Ailie Rutherford during her residency at Govanhill Baths in 2015

The project takes Govanhill’s existing alternative economy as it’s starting point, considering the diversity and richness of the local community as a form of wealth.

THE TRONGATE RUM RIOTS (Saturday 2-5pm)

Acoustic Jam hosted by Trongate Rum Riots. All welcome.

The Trongate Rum Riots hail from Glasgow, a city as soaked in salty maritime tradition as their music. Originally forming as a sea shanty band to revive this rich and emotive style of music, the band has evolved over the past four years to incorporate the many influences its troupe of musicians bring on board. Their style ranges from sweaty punk to dirty folk, with the occasional bluesy lick and Balkan riff, and is equally as visceral in its plugged-in form as it is in its stripped-back acoustic set. Guests will be dropping in and out throughout the day so bring and instrument to jam along!
